The Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC)

In an effort to promote research on Chinese history and culture, advance knowledge and influence of Chinese history and culture in Portuguese-speaking countries, and improve the general public’s understanding of Chinese cultural heritage in Macao, the University of Macau proposes to establish the Centre for Chinese History and Culture. Although Macao is a small territory in China, it has been bridging the economic and cultural relations between China and the West for over three centuries from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. The Chinese used Guangzhou and Macao as bases to explore sea routes that linked China with the West through the Strait of Malacca and the Cape of Good Hope. The crucial status of Macao in the East-West interactions during the Ming and Qing dynasties is parallel to Chang’an (Xi’an)’s position in the Silk Road network in the Han and Tang dynasties.
